Last Saturday we spent a pleasant afternoon in Bern, going to a museum, dawdling around and seeing the recently-opened bear park, the much less offensive replacement for the horrible bear pit. If we'd gone this week instead, it may have been kinda less pleasant.
Some lunatic climbed over the bear park's fence this afternoon and got into the enclosure of one of the bears. Unsurprisingly, he was attacked by the bear. A policeman shot the bear. The bear and the man are both alive but understandably injured.
Idiot.

Yeah, I was there with my wife. It was surreal. I felt bad for the bear. It was also sad to see the children witnessing it all. Also a lot of women were crying but they kept watching more and then crying louder. Really strange experience.
I caught the tail end of this story on the news and was thoroughly confused, as that sort of this doesn't *happen* in Switzerland and surely they were talking about some other place?? Bi-zarre.
Yep, it does seem pretty un-Swiss. I am kinda interested to see if anyone will feel it necessary to take further measures to prevent other people from doing it in the future. I don't really see what they would really do, though. The fences are high and clearly don't encourage people to climb over them. And if you gave any thought to getting out again (without the aid of medical personnel) you'd notice that that looks much harder then getting in does.
I wonder what they do in zoos when idiots climb over fences.
