No, obviously, but since I realised it was a controversial topic (it seems that all Swiss people think that carpet is completely unacceptable) I have spoken to several people who I previously thought were right-thinking and sensible who surprised me by saying that they think carpet is a bit gross. Apparently the issue is that it's full of yucky things that vacuum cleaners just can't deal with and so unless you get an industrial strength carpet cleaning person in every 10 minutes or so, you'll be walking around on dead insects and sticks and old drool and all sorts of similar things that have got lost in the pile. Huh.
Personally I'm not particularly convinced by all this lurking filth that people like to talk about (I'm not saying it's not there, I just don't care). I like carpets. Not that I have a problem with non-carpetty flooring either (except that it's cold and it's hard and it's unpleasant to sit on), I just don't really get the anti-carpet backlash. Oh, unless it's in the kitchen, which is just plain weird.
What do you say? Carpet - Yes or No?

Carpet in the kitchen: having had hideous patterned kitchen carpet for 18 months in one house, I'd have to say it's a no-go. And there's really no excuse for not ripping it up as soon as possible.
As for carpet in the rest of the house, it seems a perfectly fine idea to me :)
absolutely. absofreakinlutely. the first morning i wake up in my moms house while visiting america each year is definitively the best morning of my year. the feeling of planting my feet down on warm, familiar carpet and not on hard, cold, dust covered floor, is amazing. i am also a real floor sitter so carpet is huge for me that way too.
i hate no carpeting.
Go Team Carpet!
NO CARPET! It's disgusting...
The "no carpet rule" is imperative for kitchens and bathrooms (a washable bathroom mat is acceptable) if you have a minimum of hygienic standards.
However, I can understand if you like carpet in your bedroom - cold feet in the morning are disagreeable.
Ok, I'm Swiss. It's probably obvious.
Have a great time shopping, Robyn!
Cheers,
Tina
I would definitely also say no to carpet in the bathroom - but only because it would get wet, not because of hygiene issues.
Area carpets - Yes!
Wall-to-Wall carpet leftover from the previous tenants who smoked like chimneys - Yeech!
Memories from college aren't all good.
I prefer old wooden floor, if the planks are nice and light hues. No dark cherry or similar - blergh! Though walnut would be nice. No parquet either.
My two appartments are both from early 1900 and the floor boards are oooold as well. I think it has it's charm, when you can see the planks have had a worm infestation here and there at some point. Helps tell the story of the appartment.
Vinyl for kitchens (and hallways). Much more hygienic, and easier to clean.
Vinyl or ceramic/stone tiles for bathrooms. A nice dark travetin with a bit of structure in it would be ideal. And preferable rectangular tiles - not quadratic.
I don't like cold floors either, but I have a lamb skin at the end of my bed, so I step out on something soft :)
Wow, Nick, you have very specific floor covering preferences.
I like strategically placed carpets on non-carpeted floors. Most important is a carpet in the living room for sitting on.
It is nice to be able to put the carpets away in summer. And you can sweep instead of vacuum if you don't have carpets - that is much more peaceful and more environmentally friendly.
Steph - I work with interior visualization, so I have to deal with this and make up my mind or have an opinion about this fairly often.
Plus when you OWN your home instead of renting it, it suddenly has higher priority :)
But agreed on the strategic carpet placement thing. Flexible solutions are nice.
We just bought an excellent rug for the living room of our new flat. It's unfortunately pale-coloured (not good for the inevitable accidents with drinks placed on the floor. Honestly, Reto is pathetic. In our last flat, if there was nothing anywhere in the whole room except for a full glass on the floor he would manage to kick it over. Moron) but it's super-thick and will provide escellent sitting opportunities. I can't wait to move!
